Cookies are small text files a website asks your browser to remember between page loads. We try to use as few of them as we can, because nobody enjoys clicking through a banner just to read a page. Here's the short list of what we use and why.

What cookies we use

Three kinds, all named below. The first two are needed to make the site function; the third is what we use to understand how the site is being used in aggregate.

signal_session
A first-party session cookie that keeps you logged in to your student dashboard during a visit. Essential for the site to work. Expires when you close the browser.
signal_lang
Remembers your language preference (English, Spanish, Portuguese) so we don't ask you again on every visit. First-party. Expires after 12 months.
_ga, _ga_*
Google Analytics 4. Helps us see, in aggregate and anonymously, which pages are read and where visitors drop off. IP addresses are truncated. Expires after 13 months.

Third-party services

We use two third-party tools on the marketing site, and we'd rather name them than pretend we don't:

  • Google Analytics 4, configured with IP anonymization on, ad-personalization off, and the shortest data-retention window the product allows.
  • Meta Pixel (placeholder, to be enabled if and when we run any paid acquisition on Instagram or Facebook). It sets a cookie that lets us measure whether visitors who came from a Meta ad reached the page they were sent to. We don't use it to build advertising audiences from people who didn't ask for that.

If either of these is replaced, removed, or joined by another tool, this page will be updated and the date at the top changed.

How to control them

You can clear or block cookies from your browser settings at any time, on a per-site basis or globally. The session and language cookies above are needed for the site to work properly; if you block them, the dashboard will sign you out between pages and you'll see the site in its default language.

For the analytics cookies, you can opt out from our cookie banner the first time you visit, or from the link in the footer. The opt-out is stored as another small cookie (with your permission, that's the joke we don't make).

Why we don't use a heavy banner

Most consent banners are intrusive because they're trying to obtain consent for dozens of cookies a site doesn't need. We keep the list short, so the banner can stay small: a single line at the bottom of the screen, with a clear accept and a clear decline, both equally prominent, no dark patterns, no "manage your 312 partners". If we ever need more, we'll change the banner before we change the disclosure.
